Planting My Winter Garden: Garlic

November 19, 2014

This garlic bulb gave me a reason to grow garlic again. Three years ago I had “crop failure” with my own saved garlic. The sweet peas smothered the garlic as I recall. Though I kept the deal going for many years, in one season, my locally adapted garlic was gone.

The next year I purchased garlic but apparently didn’t mulch and water it enough in a relatively dry winter. Another crop failure. Last year, I didn’t plant garlic. I had lost my confidence.

Then Ann, my neighbor, gardening friend gave me that garlic bulb. I had given her some of my garlic and she had kept it growing year after year. I had to plant garlic this year.

I bought some organic softneck garlic and shallots and headed for the garden.

With Ann’s garlic and my purchased bulbs I planted the 2014 crop.

I mulched them with a thick layer of pine needles and have kept them well watered. I’m hopeful.
