My Little Garden Pests, Part 1

June 13, 2013

The damage from garden pests shows up as young crops struggle to survive and thrive. It’s hard to be upset though with the pests in my garden this year.

Here’s one of my little garden pests. Most of the time she’s chasing birds in the garden. My raised beds happen to be in her way.

I came home from work to find her shortcut from the compost bin to the main garden path was right between the pole and bush green beans. There were some losses, so now nursery trays fill the gap.

Any bare soil makes a great dirt nest. She digs a little and settles in like a royal to reign over her yard. Here some bamboo trimmings protect a bed until the next crop is planted.

For a time she was daily rearranging the mulch and dirt under the apple tree. Now a little fence fends off her intrusions.

And here I caught her snacking on asparagus. She likes the tips best.

But all is forgiven. She’s my faithful garden buddy.
