A Native Gem

20 April 2011

California Native Plant Week is April 17-23, 2011. Check the California Native Plant Week Event Calendar for events in your area. Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano has activities planned for each day. If you’ve never visited the nursery it is definitely worth the trip. Combine with a picnic or hike at nearby Caspers Wilderness Park and you have a great day.

And what is the connection to edible gardens? This little gem, Iris douglasiana, is a survivor. It lived under my orange tree during our home remodel, then was moved to a pot where it barely survived my neglect. Last fall I relocated it to the dappled shade under my apricot tree. It seems very happy and gleefully produced four flowers for California Native Plant Week.
