In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
The summer garden hastens to its end, prematurely I think. You can see its sorry state and read about its demise in The Late Summer Garden. Most years I could expect another month of production. Many gardeners are adjusting to changes in our weather patterns and the effects on our gardens
There are no recipe folders to pull for new garden harvests. I did bring out the fig folder since i have three fig fairies dropping fresh figs and fig jam at my doorstep. i oblige with strawberry guavas and guava jam for those who like them.
The arugula in the thumbnail above is the third cutting from a 12-inch terra cotta container I keep going once the cool season arugula finishes in the garden. Arugula and French sorrel fill the gap when there’s no lettuce to harvest. I could be better at succession planting of the summer lettuce.
Ricotta and lemon zest ravioli is only available at Trader Joe’s for a short summer interval and I stock up. Lemon Ricotta Ravioli Salad makes a memorable summer dinner.
These are just a few of the many red bell peppers I harvested last week. These four weighed almost two pounds.
Though I neglected to photo capture the tray of tomatoes, I did remember at the point of tomato sauce for the freezer. I’m not a purist with my sauce. I include skins and seeds. In Massachusetts where my tomato harvest was measured best in bushels I used my Squeezo Strainer. Now I know that antioxidants form in the skin as the fruit fends off undesirable free radicals and the damage caused by exposure to UV light from the sun.
The strawberry guavas began in earnest but more about them next week as I begin to process them. We gave lots away last week and invited friends in to pick them. The 60 pound abundance last year was a bit overwhelming. I now have a list of six people who like the fruit.
The Japanese anemone from my sister’s garden showed up about three weeks early this year. Last year it bloomed for the first time, after twelve years in my garden, and on her birthday, September 9.
