When to Plant Flowers...

August 7, 2014

So when there are crop failures or unplanted ground in the vegetable garden, it’s time to plant flowers. That’s what I did last weekend.

The zinnias above are from another year but my transplants will grow well into the fall. Most years they yield a Thanksgiving bouquet. By then, I’ll have forgotten about my garden disappointments.

Arugula and garden lettuce always cheer me. I planted arugula last weekend and the seedlings showed up four days later. Two six-packs of lettuce will have me in salads soon.

And the corn is almost ready to harvest.

I reread my post from two months ago, Catch-up Gardening: Overcoming Failures in the GardenPerhaps you’ll find it helpful too.
