The Garden in Early August, Part 1
August 5, 2014
Here are some photos of the garden taken over the last week. I’ll tell you what you’re seeing and what you're not seeing for a dose of realism and to keep me honest. The camera allows my brain to edit the imperfections. But come behind the scene with me.
My 4 x 4 food corn patch is growing well and the corn is as high as the proverbial elephant’s eye. The ears are developing well.
What you don’t see is the tacky plastic fencing surrounding the whole raised bed to keep my dog, Lucy out. She knocked over several corn plants to make a nice nest in the cool soil and pine needle mulch.
The cucumber vines scramble up the trellis behind the corn and have begun to weave through the corn patch.
What you don’t see is that there are no cucumbers yet though the vines are near the top of the four foot trellis..They are probably planted too close to the corn and shaded by it for part of the day.
Delicata squash is easy to grow from seed and the plant is quite prolific while staying a manageable size. Another reason I like delicata is that you can eat the skin which I suspect is rich in antioxidants from baking in the sun.
What you don’t see is the other two delicata squash plants that didn’t make it through two heat waves–likely inattention on my part.
I’ll continue the tour tomorrow with more highlights and true confessions.
