At the end of yesterday’s post the broccoli seedlings were about an inch tall. They stayed in the kitchen window for a few days then transitioned outside to a bright but mostly shaded area.

In about two weeks they were ready to transplant to four inch pots. Maybe a little beyond ready.

I used a high quality, organic potting soil mixed with my compost.

Only the best of the seedlings, those without disease and sturdy, made the cut. Now I’m down to about three dozen broccoli plants. Of these, probably 18-24 will be planted. Some may not survive and I’ll give the rest away.

Here’s this year’s attempt to protect the broccoli seedlings from the cabbage white butterfly (or cabbage moth). The chicken wire once protected lettuce seedlings from birds and here is covered with bird netting to keep the cabbage moths from slipping through.
