Shade Survivors in My Garden

July 27, 2011

My vegetable garden has some shady areas. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find a few edibles that tolerate considerable shade.

Alpine strawberries under the shade of the apricot tree.

Last year I lifted the French sorrel from its sunny position in the garden. The rhubarb went in its place; but where to put the sorrel? It has languished in this trash can lid in the dappled shade of the apricot tree for almost a year. When I forget to water it, it wilts but always comes back. Quite durable and a tasty lemon tang with fish or added to a salad.
