Planting My Winter Garden: Swiss Chard

November 6, 2014

‘Bright Lights’ Swiss chard in my winter garden another year.

I grow this variety every year because of the stunning colors and the back-lighting possibilities. I like to eat a rainbow of colors every day.

This year I’m doing an early crop of chard in a 12 inch pot. I’ll thin the plants for additions to salads and leave two or three to grow to full size. Later in the season when I have room in the garden, I’ll sow more to carry me through the summer.

If you don’t have a garden but have a sunny porch or patio you can grow Swiss chard. It’s relatively trouble-free and easy to grow from seed. Soak the seeds overnight to hasten germination.
