March Is Mud Season

11 March 2011

image

March is mud season, at least in my Massachusetts memory. On a sunny March day in Ipswich, I would decide that today would be perfect for planting peas.

A few steps into the garden were all it took to remind me that the recent spate of warm days only thawed the first half foot of earth, leaving it sodden. Stepping on such soil squeezes the air, the life from it.  A retreat is in order and the peas must wait.
