In the Summer Garden, mid-August
August 12, 2013
Mid-August and still no tomatoes, but that’s another story. These chile peppers, “Santa Fe Grande” are gems. Here’s a catalogue description:
These 3 by 1 inch hot peppers turn from yellow to orange-red. The upright, two foot plant bears continuous heavy crops–typically between 20 and 50 chili peppers per plant.
I picked up this pepper at the nursery not knowing it had these winsome characteristics. It is prolific and I’ll be leaving them on the plant to turn red.
The eggplant keeps me occupied while I wait for tomatoes. Two plants keep us and friends and family in eggplant.
The first eggplant parmesan of the season.
We came home from vacation to three pounds of green beans, even though our garden tenders had been picking during our ten day absence.
‘Emerite’ pole beans and 'Royalty Purple Pod’ bush beans have produced well in a small space over a long period. I’ll definitely plant these again next year.
Of course, zucchini continues to produce, now at a pace we can manage. We feasted on our first corn last week and garden tenders were rewarded for their labors by a few ears. More on the corn in a day or two.
And I’ll close with a kitchen bouquet of 'Seashells’ cosmos snapped in waning daylight. They cozy up to the peppers and eggplant.
