In My San Diego Garden & Kitchen

January 11, 2015

Here’s another Southern California winter salad–yesterday’s lunch: lettuce and calendula petals from the garden, purchased mizuna, and quartered kumquats brought by a friend. I love popping the sweet-tart citrus fruit in my mouth. Not seen is the Point Loma sourdough bread from Con Pane.

And it is citrus season. Navel oranges at their prime, sweet and very orange with our cool nights into the 40′s.

We juice the smallest ones and the others are eaten out of hand, mixed with blueberries for a fruit salad or shared with friends and family.

A sampling of the greens for a salad with varied flavors and colors: clockwise, ‘Freckles’ lettuce, red lettuces, French sorrel, a sturdy green lettuce and arugula.

A winter bouquet from the garden with paperwhites, astromeria and nutmeg geraniums.
