Apples in June? This confounds my New England sensibilities. But these are Dorsett Golden apples and I am in southern California. Instead of harvesting bushels from our trees in Massachusetts we count them in the dozens here.

I’m told that applesauce has been my favorite since infancy and it is no less today. We eat it with meals and add it to muesli for breakfast. I freeze some for later enjoyment.

Beets are well worth the wait though peppers and eggplant await their spot in the garden.

I pulled the remnant of the beet crop last week. The under-sized, misshapen ones went to the compost bin and only these remained. I prefer the Baby Ball beets steamed with no adornments–to savor their essence. 

And next time we’ll speak of strawberries, carrots and oranges. But for now enjoy a recent bouquet from the garden.
