In My San Diego Garden & Kitchen 2-15-16

There are signs of spring all about the garden. These little gems adorn my salads seasonally.

Violas show up in predictable places in my garden but also occasionally thrive in gravel and cracks. Nature finds a way.

I snatch a handful of the volunteer ‘Red Frills’ mustard when making a salad. The chartreuse stems and laciness add texture and elegance.

I was enchanted by this head of broccoli and so snapped the photo knowing that it would be nearly dark when I harvested it for dinner.

The original Moosewood’s Cream of Broccoli Soup is an annual event. Last night this head went from plant to pot in minutes. I snacked on the tender, mild-flavored stems as I prepared the soup.

The oranges still delight. These slices for lunch over the weekend were incredibly juicy and sweet. Ditto for the juice at breakfast. My husband estimates another five or six dozen await.

And I’ll finish with a cheery bouquet from the garden: nutmeg geraniums, summer snowflakes, paperwhites and ‘February Gold’ daffodils.
