In My San Diego Garden & Kitchen 12-7-15
The first two Satsuma tangerines of a smallish crop. Last year was the largest harvest ever–hundreds of tangerines on a five-foot tree. We’re fine with a recovery year.
Unlike tangerines, navel oranges store well on the tree. We pick them only as needed or to give away. Some years we’ll still have them on the tree in March.
Every few days we bring in about a dozen strawberry guavas. I leave some on the counter for succulent snacks. Three other friends find the fruit equally enchanting so I keep them supplied from this second wave.
Gathered from the garden yesterday–’Freckles’ lettuce, French sorrel, arugula and mint.
A showy hibiscus from a weekend walk.
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Tahitian and Hawaiian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or in a relationship. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship. The hibiscus is Hawaii’s state flower. (Wikipedia)
