In My San Diego Garden & Kitchen 11-7-16

My winter salad season begins. Not all the greens in this one are mine but the fast-growing arugula and ‘Ruby Streaks’ mustard launched the season this week. The pomegranate arils come from a tree in the biblical garden at our church. They were the sweetest, deepest red arils I’ve ever eaten.

The ‘Ruby Streaks’ mustard adds color, texture and kick to salads. It does well in containers and is easy from seed. I collect seed each year with consistent results. I get occasional seedlings with compost applied to the flower gardens. A lacy surprise.

The cool nights bring color and sweetness to the navel oranges. I’m juicing the drops but the OJ is still well shy of sweet January juice.

A November rose, prized at season’s end. This is ‘Ambridge’ a David Austin rose with incredible fragrance and coloration. Also sturdy, a good trait in vegetables and roses.
