Late in the day, late in the season…

Did you know bell peppers have a recessive gene that eliminates capsaicin, the compound that puts the “hot” in other peppers? The tangy, sweet flavor of red bell peppers comes from the increased sugar content at the bell pepper’s ripest stage. Source: Specialty Produce

A salad at the intersection of summer and fall. The cucumbers are from the summer garden and the arugula has been growing in a large pot. Pomegranates, grown here in San Diego County and available now, yield their seeds or arils for my salad.

The rhubarb I planted last spring will fade into dormancy soon. It’s quite robust and as a few leaves wilted in the 94 degree heat on Saturday, I twisted these stalks off. Perhaps some sauce or with other fruit in a dessert.
