In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen 5-16-16
We harvested the first of the apricots yesterday. Some up high were picked short of ripe, snatching them from easy access by fruit-loving birds.
The crop is decent by drought standards but far short of our best year when we had 150 lbs. I suspect there won’t be enough to freeze or make jam but we will enjoy them fresh.
Lucy, our 12 year-old Brittany faithfully retrieves the drops. Though the breed is known for a “soft mouth” in retrieving birds, ripe apricots present a challenge. Note the punctures.
We had an artichoke feast over the weekend. This is one vegetable that thrives in our foggy, coastal climate. Maybe I should give up on tomatoes and plant more artichokes.
I’ll skip the other (repetitive) harvests this week which included Brussels sprouts, Tuscan kale, broccoli side shoots, scads of celery, blueberries, oranges and limes. I’ll get to the summer garden eventually.
And I’ll end with alstromerias, feverfew and dusty miller in a weekend bouquet.
