Emily Green is one of my favorite garden writers. She starts out,

“If you’ve ever wondered when to plant lettuce, watch for dandelions. Every spring and autumn, these urban wildflowers signal the start of temperate periods when the region has warmed up or cooled down to the point that it’s salad season”. (Follow the link to read the rest of the article).

Dandelions appeared in my garden recently. Time to plant lettuce. Readers in colder climates may still have time to start mesclun lettuce. A cold frame extends the harvest. Or plant in a pot you can move inside when a freeze is expected. Better to plant seeds for a fall lettuce harvest in late August or early September if you expect a freeze.
