Harvest San Diego: Root Crops and Cauliflower

February 18, 2013

image

My negligence yielded a bevy of baby carrots this weekend. I hadn’t done a final thinning of two rows but I did this on Saturday.

About ten days ago I was “benched” when I broke a long bone on the side of my foot. On a positive note, I can weed, thin and inspect the crops seated, albeit awkwardly, in the gravel path with my ‘air boot.’

I avoid the mental rehearsal of my project list and focus on what can be done from my new perch on the sofa with my foot up.

These little cuties measured only two to four inches. I might plan this next year.

More 'Easter Egg’ radishes. A few large ones “se me escapo.” (Am I remembering my Spanish?) I plan to roast the escapees with other vegetables.

After a few bites of salad at lunch I paused to capture the moment of pleasure.

And finally, Saturday night’s dinner from the garden:

                               Cauliflower and White Bean Gratin
Stir-fried Snow Peas and Baby Carrots
                                  Rhubarb and Apple Compote

Fresh from the garden and ready for the gratin.

Vegetables in waiting.

Cauliflower and White Bean Gratin, a rif on a recipe from Real Simple(Equal amounts of half-and-half and 1% milk worked fine).

A February bouquet of Iceland poppy, euphorbia and 'February Gold’ daffodil.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne’s Dandelions. It’s a time to share what you’re harvesting in your garden or how you’re storing or using it.
