Harvest Monday: First and Last Things

May 28, 2012

It was another week of first harvests of the spring and summer season while gathering the remnants of the winter garden. Freezing chard seemed easy to do, so this week I did. You’ll find instructions on this blog or elsewhere so I’ll just share the images from my afternoon.

I cut the Swiss chard back to about two inches, watered well and mulched with compost. We’ll see about some summer harvests. Spinach bolted long ago. I like chard.

I pulled the last of the sweet and cute ‘Nantes Coreless’ carrots for dinner last night. These were from the Ferry Morse seed tape and the germination rate was the best of all the carrots I planted.

Here’s how I used the carrots. This lentil salad from Everyday Foods was delicious. Watch the short video of the prep and get the recipe

And now for first things: First harvest of the rhubarb and matilija poppies growing in the alley outside the garden. More about both in the coming week.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne’s Dandelions. It’s a time to share what you’re harvesting in your garden or how you’re using it.
