Harvest Monday: Arugula Gone Wild

January 30, 2012

This is how the arugula looked about two months ago, perfect for salads. A little inattention over the holidays and some warm weather…

and this happened: arugula that is a foot tall and too bold for most palates. So this “harvest” became the foundation for a bouquet of flowers for the church vestibule. The remainder was fed to the compost bin, absent a friend with a rabbit.

I doused the diminished arugula with a liquid kelp fertilizer and watered it well. Reigning in the arugula will let the ‘Sea of Red’ lettuce and the 'Bright Lights’ Swiss chard have some room and more sun.

Maybe I should have replanted. I’ll see how this works and post an update. Has anyone else tried whacking back arugula? Leave a comment to let me know your experience. Gardening is about experimentation.
