Backyard Gardeners and Food Exchanges
June 14, 2011
There are some exciting things going on in the edible gardening scene in San Diego. Here’s a sample of events or groups I’ve learned about recently. First, a post from Edible San Diego’s Facebook page.
EDIBLE SAN DIEGO
Food Currency Trade is a social network for people who want to trade their homegrown fruits and vegetables with members of their own community. The idea is to exchange your tomatoes for my potatoes and his eggs for her honey. It doesn’t get any fresher, organic or local than this. No store bought goods or money will be exchanged.
Anyone interested in forming a Point Loma/Ocean Beach group?
Three women in Coronado established this food exchange about a year ago and have more than 90 participants in their monthly events. An excerpt from their website:
Coronado Homegrown Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Exchange: “Sharing what we have.”
Bring your garden’s bounty, take home a wonderful assortment from Coronado’s finest gardens. No garden? Team up with a friend or neighbor. See a fruit tree in town that no one is eating, ask if you can harvest the crop and bring the owner a bag of fresh vegetables in return.
Do you have surplus produce? Would you like to do something good with your extra vegetables and fruit? Learn about SD Backyard Growers from their Facebook page:
Please support Backyard Growers by joining this group! If you are a backyard grower or just a supporter of growing food in urban, small backyard settings, please join!
Hoping to establish a strong base of people who have micro-farms in their backyards who are looking for ways to make use of their surplus. Coming together on this can help formulate ideas and will hopefully create a little more good in the world.
