Anticipated Harvests

I wandered around the backyard yesterday after a week in Massachusetts with our son’s family. Warm season harvests are nearing the end. There are a few ears of Sugar Pearl corn and bell peppers ripening. I had prepared some of the raised beds for the cool season crops. before I left.

Most surprising was number of blossoms that appeared on the patio kumquat tree in just seven days. Last year there were only a half dozen kumquats which was very disappointing. I’m elated with the prospects.

Last year’s tangerine crop was rather paltry but the tree is laden this year. We were surprised as the fruit enlarged. They should be ready in December, maybe earlier.

Citrus seems to have had a resurgence this season. Again, last year’s navel orange crop was slim, maybe only a hundred oranges. This year the tree is dripping with oranges.

A second crop of Dorsett Golden apples will be ready in six to eight weeks.

September is a typical month for the largest strawberry guava crop. This year they are months from harvest and we hope they continue to increase in size.

Cauliflower and broccoli starts ready to go in the ground this week.
