In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

It’s late summer in my garden and the harvests reflect the denouement. I welcomed the arrival of meteorological fall on September 1 and am ready to turn the corner to the cool season garden. Yesterday’s weather did not reflect the change as our very coastal location climbed to 91 degrees with humidity lagging slightly behind. I knew it would be an unusual day when the temperature was 86 degrees at 5:30 a.m.

We were away for two weeks visiting our son’s family (and grands) in the Seattle area. Arriving home two days ago, I gathered these few things (thumbnail image). My garden tender enjoyed the last of the cucumbers, a few tomatoes, zinnias and some strawberries while we were away.

When the mercury dips closer to 80 degrees I’ll begin to tidy the beds and prepare the soil for the “second season garden”. I planted romanesco and two kinds of broccoli yesterday for transplant to the garden in early October.

Another strawberry guava season began as the calendar turned to September. My husband did the work of sorting the drops which now becomes a daily task. Four pounds was the first take of this crop. I’ll prepare them later today for a blissful, deep red puree. The best ones will be shared with a few friends who relish them as much as I do.

The grevilleas do not mind the heat and contrast with the dahlias, coneflowers, anemones, phlox, rudbekia and sedum on display in Seattle gardens.

I’ve added a new to page my website. Check Garden Tasks This Week. Then head over to see what other garden bloggers around the world harvested last week at Harvest Monday hosted by Dave at Happy Acres blog.
