Every 29.5 days, the moon’s orbit brings it opposite the sun, and rays of light illuminate its round face. Indigenous cultures in North American named some full moons after natural events happening on land during that month, creating a lunar calendar that helped them track time and observe seasons. Other names are thought to have been brought to the continent by European settlers. Discover how nature inspired a year’s worth of full moons. —LL
