In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
The garden thrives with the syncopation of sunny and rainy days. The mesclun lettuce is superb, but I’ll give the credit to the weather and good breeding (Monet’s Garden Mesclun from Renee’s Garden). This mesclun mix is equal parts of some of my favorites: Little Gem, Dutch Redina, Rouge Grenobloise, Red Salad Bowl and Tango.
Here it is growing next to ‘Pomegranate Crunch.’
On the other side of the mesclun ‘Violetta’ pac choi provides stunning contrast. I harvested most of this plant for a friend who favors it more than I. Truth be told, I may have planted it for its texture and color. I’m confessing to a similar motive in past seasons for purple kohlrabi.
I harvested the first head of ‘Premium Crop’ broccoli with five more on the way. This weighed about 1.25 pounds, smaller than most years but it was exceedingly tender.
Cool temperatures at night cause the navel oranges to sweeten and so we begin to make juice.
We gather a few tangerines for lunch and snacks most days. They store best on the tree and soon we’ll pick more to share.
