Flutter By

A poem for September.

Flutter By

Leaves from the locust tree
Falling to the ground early
Flutter by me
As I sit on the porch.

They dance in the light breeze
like the butterflies,
mostly monarchs, that dart about
on a late summer day.

No matter to the resident hummingbirds
that the locust leaves fall now;
their fledglings have fled,
their nests are empty.

For me, the leaves are a reminder
that the season is near its close.
But the leaves and butterflies
Will flutter by another season.
