In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
This is how garden produce is shared in these days of Covid-19. No longer do little neighborhood girls come to pull carrots with me. I do produce deliveries to front porches with waves through the window or leave garden gifts in my mailbox. Keeping a garden is both a solitary and a communal activity; just a little more solitary these days. But there is much to share—oranges, celery, arugula, kale, lettuce, herbs and sweet peas.
Spinach shows no signs of bolting but just generates these large leaves which cook up tender and full of flavor. The variety is ‘Catalina’ which I prefer to the heavily savoyed types.
A few more substantial side shoots peeked through the leaves and the broccoli is finishing its run. Later this week my friend’s rabbits will feast on broccoli leaves and gnaw on the stems.
This is one of the two artichokes harvested for dinner this week. With all the rain they are prolific and very tender.
Some days I wander out to the garden to gather lunch.
The blueberries on my patio bush are thick on the branches and promise lots of toppings for cereal in the weeks ahead.
Wandering about the perennial border in the front yard I gathered bits of spring for five little bouquets that grace the kitchen island. Garden cheer which we all need.
