In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

Just as the weather turns cool and we have our first day of rain in over seven months, I made lime sorbet from the limes harvested a few weeks ago. I was indoors because of the weather so the time was right.

The sorbet was very easy—1.5 cups simple syrup, 1 cup lime juice and 1 teaspoon lime zest. I used a hand mixer to incorporate air and break up the ice crystals as it froze. I repeated that three times and the texture was very smooth. I’ll make this again next year. In a hurry to capture the photo before the sorbet began to melt, I forgot to top with some lime zest.

Lettuce from the garden is still a few weeks off so to purchased lettuce I added French sorrel and snow pea tendrils. Sorrel is at its best now through the spring with a bright lemony flavor. With our storms came wicked winds for us and though tied up, some of the snow peas tendrils had gone astray. These were snipped and went in a salad.

We gather our November ‘Dorsett Golden’ apples as we have need of them or as the little ones drop to the soft mulch. As I write, I can smell the Apple Galette downstairs and it’s nearly ready to remove from the oven.

The rustic apple dessert topped with vanilla ice cream was so delicious last night, I decided to have a slice with cheddar cheese for breakfast.

Of the half dozen kinds of jam I made this year kumquat might be my favorite. I have a jar open now and it went on crackers and French toast yesterday. I’m eyeing the developing crop on the patio tree.

Gardens oblige with colors to suit the season and my dining room table.
