The Circle of Life in the Garden
“Essentially, all life depends upon the soil ... There can be no life without soil and no soil without life; they have evolved together.”
—Charles E. Kellogg, USDA Yearbook of Agriculture, 1938
Soil is the soul of organic.
—Eliot Coleman
I attribute the productivity of my vegetable garden to compost. But that’s a future blog post. In the last year, rabbit manure has likely improved the quality of my compost and has decreased the finish time.
The two bunnies in the photo above, Alex and Jasper belong to my friend, Shannon. I give her garden leftovers for her four rabbits and she obliges, bringing me buckets of their bunny poop.
I hang bags of greens on my garden gate and text her. She walks by my house three days a week after work.
“Do you think the bunnies would like broccoli stalks from the plants I’ve pulled out?“ “Let’s see,” she says. “Do they mind some aphids on kale?” “Probably not.”
“And what about cauliflower leaves?”
Rupert thinks they’re delish.
And then rabbit dessert—thinned carrots from the garden.
I hope Wallace enjoyed them.
