In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Just a few of the dozens of Satsuma tangerines we’re harvesting this month. The abundant citrus crops likely reflect with rains of last winter. And this season we’re far ahead of our usual rain totals so the tangerines are especially juicy. The recent cold nights sweeten the fruit and we are smiling, just like my little neighbors.
Continuing with the color orange to brighten our winter days.
I was late in thinning the carrots this year. It was a pleasant task for the interval between the holidays. Time for reflection as I work.
The bunnies get the smallest ones and all the greens. My friend picks up garden leftovers for her rabbits and brings me bunny poop for my compost pile.
The mesclun lettuce has thrived with a favorable mix of sunny, warm days and cool, rainy ones.
Various critters have been nibbling this season so I’ve resorted to covering the tender lettuces.
The heirloom baby leaf kale in a container is doing well. I harvested what was left and then fertilized to prompt resurgence of the tender, mild kale.
The limes on my patio tree are literally falling off and I noticed that my kumquats are beginning to turn. The navel oranges are a story for another post.
Thyme and rosemary gathered for Christmas dinner.
I forgot to snap a photo of the calla lilies before I sent them home with my son after Christmas. I think this little six-pack of seed grown ‘Marvel of Four Seasons’ lettuce will be my blog bouquet this week.
