In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

I’ve begun to harvest the seven Jacaranda broccoli grown from seed and transplanted to the garden in early October. To understand my fascination with this variety read my earlier post Jacaranda Broccoli.

My husband assumed the broccoli bridal bouquet pose to appreciate the size at 10 inches across. Territorial Seed Company suggests the 5-6 inch range for the crowns but my compost-enriched soil and prime fall growing conditions yielded these. I set the harvested crown on the counter and stepped back to capture the moment and the photo.

Jacaranda broccoli is the star of my winter garden salads for a few weeks.Add garden lettuce, celery, snow peas and violas for near perfection. Lightly roasted Jacaranda broccoli retains the purple color but with steaming assumes the typical broccoli green.

Snow peas show up in all my salads now and the six-foot vines are very productive this year.

Then there are the light sautés with the last of the red bell peppers.

Little Gem lettuce and arugula are my salad staples. this week.

Apricots from summer harvests sequestered in the freezer became an apricot almond cobbler for Christmas dessert.

I’ll save the citrus and other winter garden harvests for next week. Putting a wrap on 2022 and the holidays, enjoy these—Yuletide camellias and paperwhites.
