This baby leaf kale has passed the baby leaf stage which presages the waning of the winter garden. But throughout the garden there are signs that spring is near. The nectaplum trees are in full flower and the bees flit from blossom to blossom. The espaliered apple tree has several hundred pink-white blossoms and the tree is leafing out to support fruit production. The earliest of the apricot trees has a few blooms. The artichoke plants have enlarged to deliver their luscious spring treats. And so go the seasons in my 52-week garden.

There are lots of broccoli side shoots but those too are slowing.

At least once during broccoli season I make a broccoli galette and the side shoots are perfect for that.

Brassica salads make a pleasant addition to lunches as I finish the Romanesco.

As the weather warms, the celery will be suitable for cooking but less so for eating raw. It’s such a pleasure to head to the garden and cut what’s needed for dinner as I did last night.

I made the first cutting of the second sowing of arugula yesterday which is the reminder to plant more.

Here Lemon Ricotta Ravioli from Trader Joe’s tops arugula with scallions, celery and parsley from the garden. Chopped pistachios and Parmesan cheese finish the entree.

As February comes to a close I picked the last of the ‘February Gold’ daffodils to give to a friend before we left on a camping trip. Another reminder that spring beckons.
